Workforce Training

We are dedicated to providing our workforce with only the very best and most modern training so that they are the very best and most qualified plumbing installation and maintenance professionals in the industry.

Cleveland Plumbing Industry member contractors support the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (J.A.T.C.) that oversees, regulates and funds the certified and accredited training programs – which include extensive apprenticeship training for new employees and upgrade training for journeymen plumbers.

Apprenticeship

CPI plumbers enter the workforce through a 5-year apprenticeship program with the J.A.T.C. – and before they become professional journeymen plumbers, pipefitters, sprinkler-fitters or HVAC technicians, they learn through both classroom and on-the-job training in what is considered by many to be the best construction industry apprentice program in the world.

The apprenticeship consists of five one-year segments, each of which includes 1,700 to 2,000 hours of hands-on, on-the-job training and a minimum of 246 hours of related classroom instruction. Through the J.A.T.C. apprenticeship, all CPI plumbing professionals receive a strong general education in the plumbing and mechanical trade, with core courses in basics such as mathematics, science, drafting, welding and other pipe trades related courses.

Only when members of the CPI workforce complete the five-year apprenticeship do they become certified journeymen. To learn more about our apprenticeship training, click here.

Upgrade Training

Even the most experienced journeymen plumbers who are part of the CPI workforce are constantly upgrading their skills through classes, seminars and programs provided by the J.A.T.C. CPI plumbers will regularly attend upgrade training for Plumbing Code, Natural Gas Controls, Welding & Brazing Procedures, Back-Flow Device Tester Certification, Medical Gas Systems Installation, New Materials & Techniques and more.

With the plumbing industry work becoming more complex and challenging, the modern pipe mechanics of CPI are encouraged to obtain certifications of the skills they need. Through United Association (UA) Certification Programs, CPI plumbers earn certifications in many specialized areas, including:

  • Valve Repair
  • Medical Gas Installation
  • Welding
  • Refrigerant Handling
  • Industrial Rigging
  • Foreman
  • Geo Thermal
  • Green Awareness
  • Instrumentation
  • HVAC S.T.A.R Certification
